FAQ About Hemorrhoids

FAQ About Hemorrhoids

Here’s what you ought to know about hemorrhoids.

We know that the last thing you probably want to talk about is hemorrhoids, but this is a common issue that can lead to rectal pain, discomfort, and even bleeding. Have questions about hemorrhoids? We have answers! Learning more about this issue may help you determine if it’s time to schedule an appointment with our Plano, TX, board-certified gastroenterologist Dr. Sindhu Abraham to address your hemorrhoids.

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids also referred to as piles, are swollen anal or rectal veins. There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal or external. External hemorrhoids develop in veins outside the anus while internal hemorrhoids lie inside the rectum. Sometimes internal hemorrhoids can protrude outside the anus and external hemorrhoids can sometimes develop painful clots. While uncomfortable, hemorrhoids are not dangerous or considered serious.

What are the warning signs of hemorrhoids?

Depending on the type of hemorrhoid you’re dealing with (internal vs. external), some of the symptoms you may experience include,

  • Rectal or anal itching
  • Pain
  • Bleeding (bright red blood on bathroom tissue is a sign of hemorrhoids)
  • Leakage
  • Increased pain with bowel movements

What causes hemorrhoids?

Any pressure placed on this area can increase your risk for hemorrhoids. While the most common cause of hemorrhoids is straining while going to the bathroom, other causes include,

  • Being obese or overweight
  • Pregnancy
  • Heavy lifting
  • Excessive inactive or sitting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

How are hemorrhoids treated?

There are over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams and treatments that can be used to treat external hemorrhoids. There are also ointments that can numb the area to lessen the pain and discomfort. Talk with our Plano, TX, gastroenterologist about any creams or treatments you are using for hemorrhoids to make sure they are right for you. While these treatments won’t get rid of hemorrhoids they can provide relief. Soaking in a Sitz bath can also provide relief from pain and swelling.

Hemorrhoids may shrink over time, but can also flare-up. If you find yourself dealing with recurring hemorrhoids, or your hemorrhoids aren’t responding to home care, then you may want to talk with our team about ways to get rid of your hemorrhoids. For more severe hemorrhoids, there is a ligation procedure, as well as other procedures, that can surgically remove the hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids can be a painful and downright unpleasant problem to deal with. Let our Plano, TX, GI doctor Dr. Abraham provide you with treatments to better manage and improve your hemorrhoids. Call us at (972) 867-0019 to schedule an evaluation.
